Baiten (=Newstand) <2> (Expensive but Trashy. Why buy one?) The advice I always give to my American students when they visit Japan – “You can buy ‘The Japan Times’ but don’t trust them.” I don’t want to make a political comment unless necessary. Baiten (=Newstand) (Baiten at Kokura Station in Japan) You will see a lot of Baiten (=Newstand) all over in Japan. The most popular locations are at major train stations because passengers will grab things (mostly food) before getting onto their trains. Baiten sells almost same things as convenient stores like Seven Eleven do. One difference is you can get some local souvenirs at the ones in train stations. On the other hand, you will see Baiten at hospitals, too. They sell toiletry and other necessities on a daily basis for the in-patients’ families to attend them. （つづき） そうじにきていた40だいなかばのだんせいとはなしをする。ききもしないのに、「じぶんはりこんけいけんしゃだ」とはなす。そのりゅうというのが、ネイティブアメリカンにはよくあるはなしで、「つまのうわき」なのだそうだ。「チャプターのカウンシルのメンバーがつまにでんわをしてくるようになったかとおもうと、そのあいてとデートをしはじめたのでりこんした」とのこと。ようするに、「すてられた」のである。ネイティブアメリカンのしゃかいでは、おとことおんながくっついたり、はなれたりするのは、いきをするかのごとくかんたんなことで、このてんにおいては、かれらのあとからいじゅうしてきたアメリカじんと、これまたちがったいみで、よいしょうぶをしている。 （ひんこんりつはりこんりつとかさなるてんがおおい） （つづく）

（つづき） さて、チャプターハウスのはなしにもどろう。 ナバホほりゅうちは、ごうけい１１０のチャプターにわけられ、これをさいしょうのぎょうせいたんいとして、「じち」がおこなわれている。チャプターごとにせんきょがおこなわれ、えらばれたぎいんは、ここでひらかれるぎかいにぎいんとしてしゅっせきし、じぶんのせんきょくのチャプターのためにはたらく。 チャプターハウスは、こうみんかんでもある。わたしがたいざいしていたじてんで、60さいいじょうのおとしよりは、むりょうそうげいをしてもらったうえ、ここでこれまたむりょうのちゅうしょく（ぶがいしゃは２ドルをカウンターでしょくじをうけとるさいにしはらう）をとりながら、なかまのおとしよりとのざつだんにはなをさかせる。 このひのメニューは、にほんのにくまんよりややこぶりのパン１こ、ミカン１こ、ぎゅうにゅうかみずをこっぷに１ぱい、クッキー１まい、ミンチにくとこめとやさいをいためたおかずが１ぴん、さやえんどうマメみたいのもののみずにが１ぴん。てんけいてきな「タダめし」である。 となりにすわっていたおばあさんグループのひとりにナバホごではなしかける。そのときまでは、きいの目でわたしをみていたかのじょであったが、とたんにたいどがひょうへんし、じょうぜつにはなしはじめる。「ここのせわになるまでは、ぎゅうにゅうはダメだったけれど、ここにくるようになってからはのめるようになった」とか、「うちのまごでもしゃべらんのに（よそものの）アンタがナバホごをしゃべるのをきくのはうれしい」とか、つぎからつぎへとしゃべることしゃべること…。 これらのおとしよりのせわは、すうにんのしゅふたちによってまかなわれる。かのじょたちは、そうげいようドライバーもかねており、しょくじとざつだんがおわるや、おとしよりたちをむかえにいったときとおなじように、いきさきごとにわけてくるまにのせ、いえまでおくりとどける。ごくろうなことだ。 かのじょたちとはべつに、チャプターハウスのメンテナンスであるとか、ざつようをするひとたちもいる。こちらのうけもちはだんせいがおおい。しかし、とくべつなぎょうじでもないかぎり、ひるまのことじかんたいにここではたらいているのは、すうにんといったところ。ここではたらくひとびとは、ぶぞくせいふからきゅうりょうをもらっている。 きゅうりょうをもらってはたらくひとびとにくわえ、タダではたらくひとたちもいる。けいはんざいしゃである。たとえば、さけをのんであばれ（これがいちばんおおいりゆう）、たいほされたとか、そういったひとたちが、むほうしゅうで、ぶぞくのためにほうしをさせられる。いわゆる、ほしゃくきんのかわりのしょちなのである。 （つづく）

（つづき） （でんとうてきナバホのけっこんしき） でんとうてきに、ナバホぞくにおけるこっこんは、おとこがつまのじゅうきょへ「むこいり」することによってじじつかされる。おとこにとっていちばんだいじであるとみなされている「うまのくら」をさげて、つまのホーガン（でんとうてきには「おんなのホーガン」と「おとこのホーガン」というくべつがそんざいする）にうつりすむわけであるが、つまはおっとのそこうたいどであれ、なんであれ、「このおとこはやくたたずだ」とはんだんすると、おっとがでかけているうちに、おっとのにもつとうまのくらをホーガンのそとにもじどおりほうりだしておく。これが、つまからおっとへのみくだりはんである。つまにこれをされると、おっとはほうりだされたにもつをかたにかけ、すごすごとじっかにかえる。 （げんだいバージョンでもシャーマンがしきをあげる） （つづく）

1995ねん2がつ3か ＜ナバホぞくにとってせいなる4つのやま＞ （シエラブランカピーク） （マウントテイラー） （ハンフリーズピーク） （マウントヘスペラス） さくやは、スティーブがぶぞくのでんとうにかんするたいへんきょうみぶかいはなしをきかせてくれ、でんとうてきうたまでうたってくれた。 まず、てのひらについてー。 ひだりてのたなごころをごじぶんのほうにむけていただきたい。おやゆびは、じぶんじしんをあらわしている。おやゆびのつめは、しろいかいがらをしょうちょうしている。このおやゆびのさきからだいいちかんせつが、じぶんのははおや、そこからゆびのつけねまでが、おなじくちちおやをあらわす。また、ひとさしゆびは、ははなるだいち（マザーアース）、なかゆびは、ちちなるおおぞら（ファーザースカイ）、くすりゆびはそぼ、こゆびはそふをあらわす。そして、おやゆびいがいのこれら４ほんのゆびは、それぞれ、ナバホぞくにとってせいちとかんがえられているナバホほりゅうちをかこむよんざん（シエラブランカピーク・マウントテイラー・ハンフリーズピークス・マウントヘスペラス）をあらわしている。 （つづく）

Ebi Furai (Fried Prawn/Shrimp) (Ebi Furai) Like Tonkatsu, Ebi Furai is deepfied. “Ebi” means “shrimp or prawn” while “Furai” “deepfried.” The recipe is very similar to Tonkatsu. You need a couple of things before you cook it on your own. Still, you can cook or dine out. Since shrimps or prawns costs a lot, Ebi Furai is comparatively expensive. Again, please note “Tempura” and “Katsu” are different from each other. Tempura uses “Tempura Powder” while “Katsu” or “OOO Furai” “Panko (Bread Crumbs).” See the difference in texture? Tonkatsu Tonkatsu is extremely popular among the Japanese. You can cook it at home or dine out. Chirashizushi/Barazushi (Home Made Chirashizushi for A Family and Guests) (Chirashizushi Served in an Individual Bowl at the Sushi Bar) Quite a while ago, Gomokuzushi (one kind of “Sushi”) was discussed in my blog. This is another kind of “Sushi.” The name of the cuisine which includes the word, “Sushi,” the rice is “vinegared.” This is one huge difference between OOO Don(buri) and XXX Sushi (or “-zushi” in one word). Sain-wa V (サインはV) (Started out in weekly “Shojo Furendo” in 1968 – “Friend of Girls”) (Comics Version) Original Manga was not familiar with me because I was not a fan of weekly magazine called “Shojo Furendo” in early 70’s. But its TV show, which started in 1969, grabbed my attention (and entire nation). Pokemon* (Picachu) This weirdo appeared in the market in mid 90’s. Immediately after that, its franchise grew up to be “Pokemon Company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon). None of you would say, “Don’t know Pokemon!” since you are here at JapaneseExperts.net. I left Japan in late December of the year 1998. By then, they had already established their reputation, and started to enjoy their huge revenue coming only from this franchise. Taigaa Masuku (Tiger Mask) I have never liked wrestling. Period. Not interested. Go see a professional wrestling match? No way. I’ll pass even if it is free. I can live without wrestling in my life! One day, some new TV show started. This is based on Manga shown above. Who’s the author? Ikki Kajiwara*? Interesting! Give it a shot! And…I was hooked! Kajiwara is very famous for fighting and sports themes – Remember in my previous blog, I picked “Judo Icchokusen?” That was done by Kajiwara, too. Really this guy is really good at the themes.
