Special uses of “So (「そう」)”
“So or Soo (「そ」または「そう」)” has a various usages as you may know. I would like to show you some of the special uses, which come in handy.
Today we will discuss one of them – “So(o).” In daily life, you have a lot of pleasant and exciting events while you sometimes those unplesant or dipressing. Still, you always have someone to help you understand or figure out what you didn’t know without his help.
You: “I am thinking that I’d accept the headhunter’s offer, which sounds pretty good. I am excited to get what I have been looking for – more money, higher position, and etc. I don’t have to cope with Sam, my department manager, anymore. What a breeze! Yap. It’s worth it. What do you think, Tom?”
Tom: “Are you talking about Mr. Green, the headhunter, who works for our competition, ABC electronics?”
You: “Do you know him? Nice guy, it seems.”
Tom: “Oh, yeah. He is so notorious because he does anything for money. Plus, he is a very good friend of Sam’s. Did you know that?”
You: “What do you mean by that?”
Tom: “Sam has been in charge of massive downsizing in our company. He wants to kick out as many employees as possible, you know. Especially the ones who are against him. You are one of the top in his list, aren’t you?”
You: “Aha! Now I know his trick – I quit this company because my employment at ABC seems to be confirmed. As soon as I move on to ABC, they will turn me down. I will be on the street with no job. This is his plan! Thanks, Tom. I will stick to this company. With at least a couple achievements, I will kick Sam out!”
In the conversation above, this “Aha!” could be transalted into Japanese – “Soo dattanoka (「そうだったのか」)!” “Sooka/Soodattanoka!” in Japanese is often equal to “Aha!” in English. Good for you to know, eh?
